A magnitude 4.7 earthquake near Port Vila, Shefa Province, Vanuatu, was reported only 14 minutes ago by Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate to considerable depth of 229 km beneath the epicenter late at night on Wednesday, November 3rd, 2021, at 11:45 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.8 earthquake. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.9.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Port Vila (pop. 35,900) located 78 km from the epicenter.
