Moderate yet deep magnitude 5.0 quake hits 17 km southwest of Ahuachapan, El Salvador around noon

5.0 quake 17 Nov 1:01 pm (GMT -6)
5.0 quake 17 Nov 1:01 pm (GMT -6)
An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred around noon on Wednesday, November 17th, 2021, at 1:01 pm local time near Ahuachapan, Ahuachapán, El Salvador, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate depth of 110 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.1 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Guaymango (pop. 1,500) located 10 km from the epicenter, Ahuachapan (pop. 34,100) 17 km away, Sonsonate (pop. 59,500) 24 km away, Sonzacate (pop. 15,400) 24 km away, Acajutla (pop. 22,800) 25 km away, Izalco (pop. 19,200) 28 km away, and Chalchuapa (pop. 32,300) 35 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include San Salvador (pop. 526,000) located 81 km from the epicenter, Soyapango (pop. 329,700) 86 km away, and Guatemala City (pop. 994,900) 114 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
