Just 11 minutes ago, a 4.5-magnitude earthquake struck near Santa Cruz de La Palma, La Palma Island, Canary Islands, Spain. The tremor was recorded around noon on Tuesday, November 30th, 2021, at 1:04 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 21 km below the surface.
The event was filed by Spain's Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN), the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.5 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Fuencaliente de la Palma (pop. 1,900) located 17 km from the epicenter, Mazo (pop. 4,800) 23 km away, Breña Baja (pop. 4,200) 26 km away, Brena Alta (pop. 7,100) 28 km away, Santa Cruz de La Palma (pop. 17,100) 31 km away, El Paso (pop. 7,100) 32 km away, Tazacorte (pop. 5,700) 35 km away, and Los Llanos de Aridane (pop. 20,800) 35 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Arona (pop. 78,600) located 105 km from the epicenter.
