Significant magnitude 5.3 quake hits 21 km north of Tocache, Peru early morning

An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 occurred only 7 minutes ago 21 km north of Tocache, Peru, the Institute of Geophysics of the National Polytechnic School in Quito (IGEPN) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near Tocache, Region de San Martin, Peru, early morning on Saturday, December 4th, 2021, at 6:40 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Polvora (pop. 780) located 20 km from the epicenter, Tocache (pop. 29,000) 21 km away, and Uchiza (pop. 17,700) 51 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Huicungo (pop. 6,800) located 81 km from the epicenter, Juanjui (pop. 37,700) 94 km away, and Bellavista (pop. 15,200) 105 km away.
