A magnitude 4.2 earthquake near Lubin, Lubin County, Lower Silesia, Poland, was reported only 11 minutes ago by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter late at night on Thursday, December 9th, 2021, at 10:37 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Rudna (pop. 1,600) located 5 km from the epicenter, and Lubin (pop. 77,500) 8 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Polkowice (pop. 21,600) located 11 km from the epicenter, Głogow (pop. 68,500) 23 km away, and Legnica (pop. 106,000) 29 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Złotoryja (pop. 16,600) located 44 km from the epicenter, Jawor (pop. 23,900) 47 km away, Leszno (pop. 63,600) 48 km away, and Breslau (pop. 634,900) 70 km away.
