The Swiss Seismological Service (SED) reported a magnitude 4.9 quake in Italy near Bergamo, Provincia di Bergamo, Lombardy, only 7 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Saturday, December 18th, 2021, at 11:34 am local time at a shallow depth of 29.4 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.9 as well. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.4.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Osio Sotto (pop. 11,200) located 3 km from the epicenter, Dalmine (pop. 22,900) 7 km away, Treviglio (pop. 24,900) 8 km away, and Bergamo (pop. 114,200) 14 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Monza (pop. 119,600) located 24 km from the epicenter, Cologno Monzese (pop. 45,800) 24 km away, Sesto San Giovanni (pop. 76,500) 28 km away, Cinisello Balsamo (pop. 71,100) 29 km away, and Milano (pop. 1,236,800) 33 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
