4.7 quake 9 Feb 9:00 pm (GMT +1)
An earthquake of magnitude 4.7 occurred only 11 minutes ago 10 km northwest of Carpi, Italy, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near Carpi, Modena, Emilia-Romagna, Italy, in the evening on Wednesday, February 9th, 2022, at 9:00 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Novi di Modena (pop. 5,700) located 5 km from the epicenter, Carpi (pop. 53,000) 10 km away, Correggio (pop. 15,600) 13 km away, and Mirandola (pop. 17,400) 17 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Modena (pop. 158,900) located 25 km from the epicenter, Reggio nell'Emilia (pop. 133,300) 26 km away, Sassuolo (pop. 36,900) 37 km away, Parma (pop. 146,300) 42 km away, and Bologna (pop. 366,100) 57 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
