Moderate yet deep 5.5 quake hits near General Santos City, South Cotabato, Soccsksargen, Philippines

5.5 quake 26 Feb 2:15 pm (GMT +8)
An earthquake of magnitude 5.5 occurred only 14 minutes ago 133 km southeast of General Santos City, Philippines, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 114 km beneath the epicenter near General Santos City, South Cotabato, Soccsksargen, Philippines, early afternoon on Saturday, February 26th, 2022, at 2:15 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), which listed it as a magnitude 5.8 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.5, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 6.0.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Pondaguitan (pop. 2,100) located 68 km from the epicenter, Caburan (pop. 12,600) 77 km away, Malita (pop. 41,100) 106 km away, Alabel (pop. 43,300) 120 km away, Maluñgun (pop. 52,200) 128 km away, Mati (pop. 105,900) 132 km away, and General Santos City (pop. 679,600) 133 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
