A very shallow magnitude 3.9 earthquake was reported early morning near Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, California, USA.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Thursday, March 3rd, 2022, at 3:39 am local time at a very shallow depth of 0.4 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 3.9 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Cobb (pop. 1,800) located 4 miles from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Russian River (pop. 11,700) located 13 miles from the epicenter, Russian River (pop. 11,700) 13 miles away, Clearlake (pop. 15,200) 14 miles away, and Windsor (pop. 27,500) 16 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Santa Rosa (pop. 175,000) located 23 miles from the epicenter, Rohnert Park (pop. 42,400) 30 miles away, Petaluma (pop. 60,400) 38 miles away, and Napa (pop. 80,400) 42 miles away.
