Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN) reported a magnitude 4.8 quake in Mexico near Acapulco, Acapulco de Juárez, Guerrero, 39 minutes ago. The earthquake hit around noon on Friday, March 18th, 2022, at 1:53 pm local time at a shallow depth of 22 km. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Acapulco (pop. 673,500) located 4 km from the epicenter, Bajos del Ejido (pop. 6,200) 13 km away, and Tres Palos (pop. 5,000) 18 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Coyuca de Benitez (pop. 13,600) located 23 km from the epicenter, Atoyac de Alvarez (pop. 21,400) 65 km away, Técpan de Galeana (pop. 15,100) 83 km away, Chilpancingo de los Bravo (pop. 187,300) 91 km away, and Ayutla de los Libres (pop. 15,400) 92 km away.
