5.3 quake 12 Km NE of Sincik, Turkey, Apr 9, 2022 5:02 pm (GMT +3)
Just 19 minutes ago, a 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck near Malatya, Turkey. The tremor was recorded in the afternoon on Saturday, April 9th, 2022, at 5:02 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.5. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.0, the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC) at magnitude 5.1, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.9, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Sincik (pop. 7,200) located 12 km from the epicenter.
In Kâhta (pop. 73,100) located 38 km from the epicenter, Malatya (pop. 441,800) 42 km away, and Baskil (pop. 15,900) 51 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Çermik (pop. 21,000) located 65 km from the epicenter, Siverek (pop. 175,300) 67 km away, Besni (pop. 41,900) 88 km away, and Ergani (pop. 52,700) 93 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
