An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 occurred only 16 minutes ago 42 km northeast of Syracuse, Italy, Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 33 km beneath the epicenter near Syracuse, Sicily, Italy, early morning on Friday, April 15th, 2022, at 3:34 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.4.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Augusta (pop. 30,700) located 38 km from the epicenter, Syracuse (pop. 97,500) 42 km away, Floridia (pop. 22,100) 51 km away, Acireale (pop. 49,500) 52 km away, Catania (pop. 290,900) 53 km away, Gravina di Catania (pop. 26,500) 57 km away, Mascalucia (pop. 29,900) 58 km away, Misterbianco (pop. 45,500) 59 km away, and Paternò (pop. 46,000) 70 km away.
