Strong mag. 5.3 earthquake - Coral Sea, 34 km east of Lata, Solomon Islands, on Tuesday, Apr 19, 2022 at 11:20 am (GMT +11) -

Just 27 minutes ago, a 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck near Lata, Santa Cruz Islands, Temotu Province, Solomon Islands. The tremor was recorded in the morning on Tuesday, April 19th, 2022, at 11:20 am local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.3 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Lata (pop. 550) located 34 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.

Based on its magnitude, the fault that was active during the quake ruptured along a surface of approx. 20 km² (=8 sqare miles) as a first-order estimate. The length of the rupture zone thus was probably around 8 km (5 mi).
Aftershocks typically occur during the days and weeks following the quake at or near the same fault, at distances of up to approx. two times the length of the rupture zone.
