Moderate yet deep magnitude 5.1 earthquake 22 km northwest of Ambunti, Papua New Guinea5.1 quake 27 Apr 5:08 am (GMT +10)
The citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake reported a magnitude 5.1 quake in Papua New Guinea near Ambunti, Ambunti-Dreikikir, East Sepik Province, only 16 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Wednesday, April 27th, 2022, at 5:08 am local time at an intermediate depth of 126.7 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.3. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.3, and France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.4.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Ambunti (pop. 2,100) located 22 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Aitape (pop. 5,500) located 111 km from the epicenter, Wewak (pop. 18,200) 121 km away, and Wewak (pop. 18,200) 121 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
