The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 4.6 quake in Mexico near Miahuatlan de Porfirio Diaz, Miahuatlán de Porfirio Díaz, Oaxaca, only 14 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Wednesday, April 27th, 2022, at 6:01 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.6 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In San Pedro Mixtepec (pop. 3,800) located 5 km from the epicenter, and San Cristobal (pop. 4,100) 19 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Miahuatlan de Porfirio Diaz (pop. 23,900) located 39 km from the epicenter, and Crucecita (pop. 15,100) 57 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Ocotlan de Morelos (pop. 15,000) located 74 km from the epicenter, San Antonio de la Cal (pop. 20,200) 98 km away, Santa Cruz Xoxocotlan (pop. 67,100) 100 km away, Puerto Escondido (pop. 25,900) 100 km away, and Oaxaca (pop. 255,000) 102 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
