The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 4.2 quake in Poland near Lubin, Lubin County, Lower Silesia, only 6 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the afternoon on Tuesday, May 3rd, 2022, at 5:24 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Polkowice (pop. 21,600) located 5 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Lubin (pop. 77,500) located 14 km from the epicenter, Glogow (pop. 68,500) 16 km away, and Legnica (pop. 106,000) 35 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Nowa Sol (pop. 40,400) located 43 km from the epicenter, Goldberg (pop. 16,600) 46 km away, Leszno (pop. 63,600) 47 km away, Bolesławiec (pop. 40,700) 49 km away, and Breslau (pop. 634,900) 78 km away.
