An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 occurred in the morning on Friday, May 6th, 2022, at 10:51 am local time near Ocos, Ocós, San Marcos, Guatemala, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN), which listed it as a magnitude 4.7 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.9, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.9, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.6.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Ocos (pop. 9,500) located 89 km from the epicenter, Brisas Barra de Suchiate (pop. 13,700) 89 km away, Champerico (pop. 7,800) 93 km away, La Libertad (pop. 4,500) 97 km away, and Ciudad Tecun Uman (pop. 11,400) 108 km away.
