5.0 quake 7 May 6:25 pm (GMT -6)
Costa Rica was shaken near San Isidro, Pérez Zeledón, Provincia de San José, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.0 only 20 minutes ago, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 18.3 km beneath the epicenter near San Isidro, Pérez Zeledón, Provincia de San José, Costa Rica, early evening on Saturday, May 7th, 2022, at 6:25 pm local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.9. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.9, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Golfito (pop. 6,800) located 14 km from the epicenter, San Vito (pop. 4,000) 26 km away, San Vito (pop. 4,000) 26 km away, and Corredor (pop. 7,100) 27 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Canoas (pop. 4,600) located 42 km from the epicenter, Buenos Aires (pop. 11,700) 54 km away, Concepcion (pop. 17,700) 65 km away, David (pop. 82,000) 88 km away, and San Isidro (pop. 34,900) 93 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
