Just 34 minutes ago, a 3.3-magnitude earthquake struck near Montluçon, Allier, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France. The tremor was recorded around noon on Monday, May 9th, 2022, at 1:13 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 24 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera, IPMA), the first seismological agency to report it.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Ronnet (pop. 180) located 2 km from the epicenter, Saint-Éloy-les-Mines (pop. 4,500) 10 km away, Commentry (pop. 7,500) 10 km away, Néris-les-Bains (pop. 2,800) 11 km away, Montluçon (pop. 45,000) 18 km away, Désertines (pop. 4,800) 19 km away, and Domérat (pop. 9,000) 23 km away. In Riom (pop. 20,100, 45 km away), the quake was probably not felt.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 4.5 quake in France near Montluçon, Allier, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, only 13 minutes ago. The earthquake hit around noon on Monday, May 9th, 2022, at 1:13 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 2 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Montaigut (pop. 1000) located 5 km from the epicenter.
In Commentry (pop. 7,500) located 9 km from the epicenter, and Montluçon (pop. 45,000) 20 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Riom (pop. 20,100) located 44 km from the epicenter, Vichy (pop. 27,000) 49 km away, Clermont-Ferrand (pop. 138,700) 54 km away, Chamalières (pop. 20,300) 54 km away, and Moulins (pop. 23,100) 56 km away.
