4.5 quake 14 May 1:08 am (GMT +3)
Just 6 minutes ago, a 4.5-magnitude earthquake struck near Cesme, Çeşme, İzmir, Turkey. The tremor was recorded early morning on Saturday, May 14th, 2022, at 1:08 am local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), which listed it as a magnitude 4.5 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.5, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Alacati (pop. 3,700) located 15 km from the epicenter, and Cesme (pop. 21,300) 17 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Castro (pop. 24,000) located 24 km from the epicenter, Vrontados (pop. 5,300) 28 km away, Urla (pop. 45,200) 46 km away, and Seferihisar (pop. 19,600) 50 km away.
