Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.7 just reported 7 km southeast of Nueva Palestina, Mexico4.7 quake 17 May 7:47 pm (GMT -5)
Just 27 minutes ago, a 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Nueva Palestina, Ocosingo, Chiapas, Mexico. The tremor was recorded early evening on Tuesday, May 17th, 2022, at 7:47 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface.
The event was filed by Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN), the first seismological agency to report it.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Nueva Palestina (pop. 10,600) located 7 km from the epicenter, and Cintalapa (pop. 1,600) 22 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Perla de Acapulco (pop. 1,500) located 30 km from the epicenter, Frontera Corozal (pop. 5,200) 33 km away, Frontera Corozal (pop. 5,200) 34 km away, and Tenosique (pop. 32,600) 79 km away.
