An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 occurred only 28 minutes ago 8 km east of Masbate, Philippines, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 5 km beneath the epicenter near Masbate, Bicol, Philippines, in the morning on Wednesday, May 18th, 2022, at 9:38 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), which listed it as a magnitude 4.8 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Mobo (pop. 3,800) located 7 km from the epicenter, and Batuan (pop. 2,500) 7 km away.
In Masbate (pop. 47,500) located 8 km from the epicenter, San Fernando (pop. 6,200) 13 km away, and San Jacinto (pop. 7,600) 21 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Bulan (pop. 28,500) located 38 km from the epicenter, Irosin (pop. 20,700) 51 km away, Sorsogon (pop. 82,700) 73 km away, and Legazpi (pop. 179,500) 85 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
