4.9 quake Kunduz, Afghanistan, May 24, 2022 11:41 am (GMT +4:30)
An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 occurred only 19 minutes ago 72 km southeast of Farkhār, Afghanistan, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 103 km beneath the epicenter near Farkhār, Takhar, Afghanistan, in the morning on Tuesday, May 24th, 2022, at 11:11 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), which listed it as a magnitude 5.1 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.9, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.0.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Farkhār (pop. 10,500) located 72 km from the epicenter, Jurm (pop. 12,100) 89 km away, and Taloqan (pop. 64,300) 105 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
