Just 11 minutes ago, a 4.0-magnitude earthquake struck near Namie, Futaba-gun, Fukushima, Japan. The tremor was recorded early morning on Wednesday, May 25th, 2022, at 3:04 am local time, at an intermediate depth of 90 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.0 as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Namie (pop. 21,900) located 9 km from the epicenter, Funehikimachi-funehiki (pop. 23,500) 47 km away, and Iwaki (pop. 357,300) 54 km away. In Nihommatsu (pop. 36,300, 60 km away), Kakuda (pop. 33,200, 60 km away), Watari (pop. 36,300, 63 km away), Kōriyama (pop. 340,600, 64 km away), Sukagawa (pop. 68,800, 68 km away), and Sendai (pop. 1,063,100, 88 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
