Moderate magnitude 4.2 quake hits 19 km northwest of Agrinio, Greece late at night

4.2 quake 24 May 11:50 pm (GMT +3)
4.2 quake 24 May 11:50 pm (GMT +3)
A magnitude 4.2 earthquake near Agrinio, Aitoloakarnania, Western Greece, Greece, was reported only 18 minutes ago by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Greece. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 18.7 km beneath the epicenter late at night on Tuesday, May 24th, 2022, at 11:50 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.2, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.3.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Rivio (pop. 210) located 3 km from the epicenter, Lepenou (pop. 2,100) 6 km away, Fyteies (pop. 1,500) 6 km away, Amfilochia (pop. 4,000) 15 km away, Agios Konstantinos (pop. 6,500) 18 km away, and Agrinio (pop. 46,900) 19 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Preveza (pop. 17,300) located 49 km from the epicenter, Arta (pop. 21,900) 52 km away, and Patras (pop. 168,000) 70 km away.
