An intermediate magnitude 4.3 earthquake was reported late at night near Bucaramanga, Santander, Colombia.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Friday, May 27th, 2022, at 10:01 pm local time at an intermediate depth of 146.8 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.1 earthquake.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Piedecuesta (pop. 86,400) located 13 km from the epicenter, Floridablanca (pop. 252,300) 21 km away, Giron (pop. 108,500) 24 km away, Bucaramanga (pop. 571,800) 28 km away, Lebrija (pop. 8,900) 31 km away, San Gil (pop. 33,600) 36 km away, and Malaga (pop. 18,700) 42 km away. In Socorro (pop. 17,800, 50 km away), and Pamplona (pop. 53,600, 73 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
