Just 9 minutes ago, a 3.5-magnitude earthquake struck near Bakersfield, Kern County, California, USA. The tremor was recorded early afternoon on Wednesday, June 8th, 2022, at 3:48 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 2.2 miles below the surface.
The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 3.5 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Squirrel Mountain Valley (pop. 550) located 8 miles from the epicenter, Bodfish (pop. 2,000) 8 miles away, and Lake Isabella (pop. 3,500) 9 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Alta Sierra (pop. 7,000) located 18 miles from the epicenter, Tehachapi (pop. 13,000) 27 miles away, and Arvin (pop. 20,900) 33 miles away. In Oildale (pop. 32,700, 36 miles away), and Bakersfield (pop. 373,600, 37 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
