An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 occurred only 20 minutes ago 62 km northeast of Darende, Turkey, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 15 km beneath the epicenter near Darende, Malatya, Turkey, late at night on Wednesday, June 29th, 2022, at 10:04 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.5 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC) at magnitude 4.6, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kale (pop. 5,200) located 20 km from the epicenter, Kuluncak (pop. 8,500) 22 km away, Hekimhan (pop. 13,900) 30 km away, Kangal (pop. 11,900) 38 km away, Divriği (pop. 13,100) 46 km away, Gürün (pop. 12,700) 57 km away, Darende (pop. 20,400) 62 km away, and Arapgir (pop. 10,000) 63 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Malatya (pop. 441,800) located 92 km from the epicenter.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
