Just 10 minutes ago, a 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck near Las Tablas, Distrito de Las Tablas, Provincia de Los Santos, Panama. The tremor was recorded early morning on Tuesday, July 5th, 2022, at 3:56 am local time, at a very shallow depth of 5 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In El Guayabo (pop. 31) located 4 km from the epicenter, and Tonosi (pop. 1,500) 11 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Llano de Piedra (pop. 1,100) located 29 km from the epicenter, Macaracas (pop. 2,200) 36 km away, La Palma (pop. 1,300) 39 km away, and Las Tablas (pop. 8,900) 49 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Los Santos (pop. 6,000) located 60 km from the epicenter, San Juan Bautista (pop. 11,800) 63 km away, and Monagrillo (pop. 10,800) 65 km away.
