An earthquake of magnitude 3.3 occurred only 8 minutes ago 43 miles northwest of Kodiak, Alaska, United States, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 36 miles beneath the epicenter near Kodiak, Kodiak Island, Alaska, USA, in the afternoon on Friday, July 22nd, 2022, at 5:19 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 3.3 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.3.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Aleneva (pop. 37, 20 miles away), Port Lions (pop. 200, 26 miles away), Kodiak Station (pop. 1,300, 38 miles away), Womens Bay (pop. 720, 40 miles away), Larsen Bay (pop. 88, 43 miles away), and Kodiak (pop. 6,300, 43 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
