The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 5.2 quake in the United States near Akutan, Aleutians East, Alaska, only 8 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the afternoon on Sunday, July 31st, 2022, at 4:36 pm local time at a moderately shallow depth of 19 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Akutan (pop. 1000) located 56 miles from the epicenter, Unalaska (pop. 4,500) 65 miles away, and Dutch Harbor (pop. 4,400) 66 miles away.
