4.2 quake 53 km south of Erzurum, Turkey, Aug 2, 2022 3:37 am (GMT +3)
A shallow magnitude 4.2 earthquake was reported early morning near Erzurum, Turkey.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Tuesday, August 2nd, 2022, at 3:37 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.8. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC) at magnitude 4.2, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.2, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 3.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Karlıova (pop. 8,800) located 29 km from the epicenter, Tekman (pop. 8,300) 30 km away, Varto (pop. 18,700) 31 km away, and Hınıs (pop. 35,500) 35 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Erzurum (pop. 420,700) located 53 km from the epicenter, Solhan (pop. 15,300) 55 km away, Pasinler (pop. 24,600) 69 km away, Karaçoban (pop. 20,500) 70 km away, and Bingol (pop. 80,600) 92 km away.
