A magnitude 4.2 earthquake near David, Distrito de David, Provincia de Chiriqui, Panama, was reported only 13 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 14 km beneath the epicenter late at night on Wednesday, August 3rd, 2022, at 10:35 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Punta de Burica (pop. 1,400) located 28 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Puerto Armuelles (pop. 11,700) located 49 km from the epicenter, El Palmar (pop. 4,500) 51 km away, Divala (pop. 2,500) 59 km away, Pedregal (pop. 17,400) 61 km away, David (pop. 82,000) 66 km away, San Pablo Viejo Abajo (pop. 6,000) 66 km away, Bugaba (pop. 3,300) 68 km away, and Las Lomas (pop. 11,700) 68 km away.
