Just 16 minutes ago, a 4.5-magnitude earthquake struck near Chimbote, Provincia de Santa, Ancash, Peru. The tremor was recorded early evening on Friday, August 5th, 2022, at 6:56 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 20 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.5 as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Puerto de Casma (pop. 380) located 95 km from the epicenter, Los Chimus (pop. 280) 98 km away, San Diego (pop. 460) 98 km away, Huarmey (pop. 16,200) 103 km away, and Chimbote (pop. 317,000) 112 km away.
