Just 19 minutes ago, a 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Hasaki, Chōshi-shi, Chiba, Japan. The tremor was recorded in the evening on Friday, August 12th, 2022, at 9:11 pm local time, at a moderately shallow depth of 40 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.7 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Hasaki (pop. 39,200) located 21 km from the epicenter, Asahi (pop. 41,700) 34 km away, Yōkaichiba (pop. 32,700) 42 km away, Omigawa (pop. 25,800) 44 km away, Kashima-shi (pop. 65,800) 52 km away, Katori-shi (pop. 83,200) 56 km away, Нарита (pop. 100,600) 65 km away, and Mobara (pop. 97,300) 67 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Chiba (pop. 919,700) located 80 km from the epicenter.

A moderately shallow magnitude 4.7 earthquake was reported in the evening near Hasaki, Chōshi-shi, Chiba, Japan.
According to Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), the quake hit on Friday, August 12th, 2022, at 9:11 pm local time at a moderately shallow depth of 39.6 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), which listed it as a magnitude 5.1 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
