4.3 quake 12 Aug 10:51 pm (GMT +4:30)
The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 4.3 quake in Iran near Bandar-e Anzali, Gilan Province, only 21 minutes ago. The earthquake hit late at night on Friday, August 12th, 2022, at 10:21 pm local time at a shallow depth of 23 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.3 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Bandar-e Anzali (pop. 110,800) located 33 km from the epicenter, Fūman (pop. 27,800) 36 km away, and Hashtpar (pop. 45,300) 37 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Rasht (pop. 594,600) located 51 km from the epicenter, Khalkhāl (pop. 51,000) 51 km away, Āstāneh-ye Ashrafīyeh (pop. 42,800) 80 km away, Pādegān-e Manjīl (pop. 17,400) 89 km away, and Langarūd (pop. 68,100) 100 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
