An earthquake of magnitude 3.5 occurred after midnight on Saturday, August 13th, 2022, at 12:25 am local time near McKinleyville, Humboldt County, California, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 15 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 3.5 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.5.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Westhaven-Moonstone (pop. 1,200) located 13 miles from the epicenter, McKinleyville (pop. 15,200) 17 miles away, Blue Lake (pop. 1,300) 18 miles away, Willow Creek (pop. 1,700) 19 miles away, Arcata (pop. 17,800) 21 miles away, Bayside (pop. 17,100) 22 miles away, and Eureka (pop. 27,000) 27 miles away.
