An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 occurred only 18 minutes ago 86 km northwest of Naga, Japan, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 96.9 km beneath the epicenter near Naga, Nago Shi, Okinawa, Japan, in the morning on Sunday, August 14th, 2022, at 8:27 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.9, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.4.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Naga (pop. 59,600) located 86 km from the epicenter, Ishikawa (pop. 22,400) 94 km away, Okinawa (pop. 125,500) 102 km away, Gushikawa (pop. 65,300) 102 km away, Chatan (pop. 27,800) 103 km away, Katsuren-haebaru (pop. 34,200) 105 km away, Chinon (pop. 91,800) 108 km away, Naha (pop. 300,800) 110 km away, Tomigusuku (pop. 55,700) 113 km away, and Itoman (pop. 57,200) 119 km away.
