An earthquake of magnitude 4.7 occurred only 12 minutes ago 96 km northwest of Portoviejo, Ecuador, the Institute of Geophysics of the National Polytechnic School in Quito (IGEPN) reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 8 km beneath the epicenter near Portoviejo, Cantón Portoviejo, Provincia de Manabi, Ecuador, early morning on Wednesday, August 17th, 2022, at 2:09 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.7 earthquake as well. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 4.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Caracas (pop. 37,100) located 66 km from the epicenter, and Manta (pop. 183,200) 73 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Montecristi (pop. 18,400) located 84 km from the epicenter, Rocafuerte (pop. 10,300) 85 km away, Tosagua (pop. 14,700) 94 km away, Portoviejo (pop. 170,300) 96 km away, and Chone (pop. 44,800) 104 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
