An earthquake of magnitude 5.5 occurred late at night on Wednesday, August 17th, 2022, at 10:10 pm local time near Rancagua, Cachapoal, O'Higgins, Chile, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate depth of 95 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.5 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.6.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Machali (pop. 27,600) located 34 km from the epicenter, Rancagua (pop. 212,700) 42 km away, Rengo (pop. 38,100) 46 km away, Graneros (pop. 23,300) 48 km away, San Vicente de Tagua Tagua (pop. 29,600) 66 km away, San Vicente (pop. 22,600) 67 km away, Puente Alto (pop. 510,400) 87 km away, La Pintana (pop. 201,200) 91 km away, San Bernardo (pop. 249,900) 92 km away, and Santiago de Chile (pop. 4,837,300) 105 km away.
