An earthquake of magnitude 3.6 occurred early afternoon on Saturday, August 20th, 2022, at 3:11 pm local time near Amiens, Somme, Hauts-de-France, France, as reported by France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 5 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 3.1 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Sainte-Segrée (pop. 57) located 0 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Airaines (pop. 2,100) located 23 km from the epicenter, Salouël (pop. 4,200) 27 km away, Amiens (pop. 143,100) 32 km away, Longueau (pop. 5,200) 35 km away, Beauvais (pop. 53,400) 38 km away, Abbeville (pop. 26,500) 39 km away, and Abadia de Corbie (pop. 6,500) 46 km away.
