A shallow magnitude 4.5 earthquake was reported in the morning near Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.
According to the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, the quake hit on Thursday, September 1st, 2022, at 11:53 am local time at a shallow depth of 14.3 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Cabarete (pop. 4,100) located 23 km from the epicenter, Monte Llano (pop. 19,000) 34 km away, Puerto Plata (pop. 146,000) 38 km away, Rio Grande (pop. 20,200) 52 km away, and Tamboril (pop. 23,300) 58 km away.
