Magnitude 5.1 earthquake strikes near Palekastro, Lasíthi, Crete, Greece

5.1 quake 3 Sep 6:13 am (GMT +2)
5.1 quake 3 Sep 6:13 am (GMT +2)
Just 11 minutes ago, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Palekastro, Lasíthi, Crete, Greece. The tremor was recorded early morning on Saturday, September 3rd, 2022, at 6:13 am local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), which listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.1, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.1, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.0.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Palekastro (pop. 1,100) located 41 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Sitia (pop. 8,700) located 51 km from the epicenter, Ierapetra (pop. 12,400) 72 km away, Gra Lygia (pop. 1,500) 77 km away, Agios Nikolaos (pop. 11,400) 80 km away, Elounda (pop. 2,200) 83 km away, and Neapoli (pop. 2,700) 92 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
