Moderate magnitude 4.2 earthquake 15 km southwest of Taupo, New Zealand

4.2 quake 10 Sep 6:36 am (GMT +12)
An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 occurred early morning on Saturday, September 10th, 2022, at 6:36 am local time near Taupo, Taupo District, Waikato, New Zealand, as reported by New Zealand's Earthquake Commission and Geological Survey (GeoNet).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 5 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.4.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Acacia Bay (pop. 1,700) located 11 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Taupo (pop. 22,500) located 15 km from the epicenter, and Turangi (pop. 3,400) 27 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Tokoroa (pop. 14,300) located 64 km from the epicenter, and Rotorua (pop. 65,900) 77 km away.
