The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 4.7 quake in France near Valencia, Droma, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, only 14 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Monday, September 26th, 2022, at 8:16 am local time at a shallow depth of 12 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.7 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Lamastre (pop. 2,700) located 11 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Bourg-lès-Valence (pop. 19,800) located 27 km from the epicenter, Valencia (pop. 63,900) 28 km away, Annonay (pop. 18,400) 40 km away, Montelimar (pop. 35,600) 40 km away, Romans-sur-Isère (pop. 35,000) 44 km away, and St Étienne (pop. 176,300) 62 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Grenoble (pop. 158,600) located 96 km from the epicenter, and Lyon (pop. 472,300) 98 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
