A very shallow magnitude 3.7 earthquake was reported early morning near Bakersfield, Kern County, California, USA.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Tuesday, September 27th, 2022, at 1:03 am local time at a very shallow depth of 1.9 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 3.7 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) at magnitude 3.7, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 3.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Bodfish (pop. 2,000) located 8 miles from the epicenter, and Lake Isabella (pop. 3,500) 9 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Alta Sierra (pop. 7,000) located 18 miles from the epicenter, Tehachapi (pop. 13,000) 26 miles away, Arvin (pop. 20,900) 32 miles away, Oildale (pop. 32,700) 36 miles away, and Bakersfield (pop. 373,600) 37 miles away. In Porterville (pop. 56,100, 52 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
