An earthquake of magnitude 2.6 occurred in the morning on Tuesday, September 27th, 2022, at 8:39 am local time near Gilroy, Santa Clara County, California, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 4 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 2.6 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 2.6, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 2.6.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Gilroy (pop. 53,200) located 4 miles from the epicenter, Interlaken (pop. 7,300) 7 miles away, San Martin (pop. 7,000) 9 miles away, and Watsonville (pop. 53,600) 9 miles away.
