Significant magnitude 5.2 earthquake 109 km southwest of Intipuca, El Salvador

5.2 quake 30 Sep 11:32 am (GMT -6)
5.2 quake 30 Sep 11:32 am (GMT -6)
An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred only 24 minutes ago 109 km southwest of Intipuca, El Salvador, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 9.8 km beneath the epicenter near Intipuca, Departamento de La Union, El Salvador, in the morning on Friday, September 30th, 2022, at 11:32 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 4.7 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.2, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Intipuca (pop. 3,500) located 109 km from the epicenter, and Usulutan (pop. 51,900) 122 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
