5.0 quake 1 Oct 1:31 pm (GMT -4)
5.0 quake 1 Oct 1:31 pm (GMT -4)
An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred only 13 minutes ago 10 km northwest of Santa Cruz de El Seibo, Dominican Republic, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 105.9 km beneath the epicenter near Santa Cruz de El Seibo, El Seibo, Provincia de El Seibo, Dominican Republic, around noon on Saturday, October 1st, 2022, at 1:31 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.8. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.0, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Pedro Sanchez (pop. 1,600) located 4 km from the epicenter, Santa Cruz de El Seibo (pop. 23,500) 10 km away, Hato Mayor del Rey (pop. 36,000) 18 km away, Quisqueya (pop. 17,700) 44 km away, and Bayaguana (pop. 21,100) 57 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Boca Chica (pop. 46,300) located 67 km from the epicenter, Punta Cana (pop. 100,000) 79 km away, Santo Domingo Este (pop. 700,000) 88 km away, and Santo Domingo (pop. 2,201,900) 92 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
