Significant magnitude 5.0 earthquake 80 km southeast of Ierapetra, Greece

5.0 quake 2 Oct 6:04 am (GMT +2)
5.0 quake 2 Oct 6:04 am (GMT +2)
An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred only 11 minutes ago 80 km southeast of Ierapetra, Greece, the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near Ierapetra, Lasíthi, Crete, Greece, early morning on Sunday, October 2nd, 2022, at 6:04 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.1, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.1, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.2.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kalo Nero (pop. 78) located 71 km from the epicenter, Ierapetra (pop. 12,400) 80 km away, Kentri (pop. 1000) 81 km away, Gra Lygia (pop. 1,500) 82 km away, Nea Anatoli (pop. 1000) 83 km away, Palekastro (pop. 1,100) 90 km away, Sitia (pop. 8,700) 91 km away, Kritsa (pop. 1,300) 98 km away, and Agios Nikolaos (pop. 11,400) 99 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
